10 Simple Ways to Minimise Your Environmental Toxin Exposure for Improved Hormonal Balance

We often tend to underestimate the amount of environmental toxins that are present in our everyday life. Many think that the only way to absorb toxins is by ingesting them or breathing in fumes but what we put on our skin is quickly absorbed and goes straight into our bloodstream. Many everyday products such as perfumes, makeup, cleaning products, soaps and many more contribute to the accumulation of toxins into our body.

In this blog, I will explain how those chemicals can affect our hormones and share 10 easy ways to minimise your exposure.

How do everyday environmental toxins affect our hormones?

Hormones are essential messengers that coordinate many bodily functions, from metabolism to reproduction. These chemicals together are known as endocrine disruptors as they interfere with normal hormonal balance in our body and can:

  • Mimic Hormones: Some disruptors can act like natural hormones. For example, BPA can

mimic estrogen, leading to potential overproduction and hormonal disruptions.

  • Block Hormones: Others prevent natural hormones from binding to their receptors. For instance, certain pesticides can block thyroid hormones, reducing their effectiveness.

  • Alter Hormone Production: Endocrine disruptors can also cause glands to produce too little or too much hormone. For example, studies show that exposure to phthalates (see below) can lead to decreased testosterone levels in men.

Overall, conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), irregular menstrual cycle, infertility and early menopause have been linked with a high exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Let's first identify the different types of toxins.

  • Bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates often found in plastics

  • Parabens found in cosmetic products

  • Pesticides including glyphosate

    • Perfluorinated chemicals found in non-stick cookware

  • Heavy metals

Tips to easily reduce your exposure:

  1. Avoid storing and heating food in plastic. Use glass, ceramic or stainless steel

  2. Use a glass or stainless steel water bottle

  3. Reduce your consumption of canned foods

  4. Go fragrance-free! Remember to also avoid air fresheners, scented candles, scented laundry detergent.

  5. Filter your water

  6. Use cast-iron or stainless steel cookware

  7. Avoid using aluminum foil in your kitchen

  8. Use low-toxin menstrual products such as silicone menstrual cup, organic tampons and pads

  9. Clean your home with natural products. You can simply mix some white vinegar with fragrance-free washing up liquid.

  10. Wash your hands regularly and especially before eating

Now that you know all about toxins, what are you going to start doing today to improve your hormones?
